According to Publishers Weekly, Virgin Comics has closed down its US operations and laid off the staff.  It’s a shame.  I wasn’t a big follower of Virgin’s comics…they were seemingly obsessed with putting out comics created by celebrities (actors Ed Norton and Nicolas Cage, Deprak Chopra, directors John Woo and Guy Ritchie, and adult film actress Jenna Jameson (among others) with an eye towards turning the comics into movies…but it is always bad for the comic industry when an ambitious publisher fails.

The one Virgin book I was enthusiastic about was Garth Ennis and Gary Erskine’s wonderful revival of Dan Dare.  The first mini-series ended recently but we were promised a second mini-series this fall…if Virgin is indeed completely gone I do hope that another publisher will pick this up (are you listening, Dark Horse?  Image?  Somebody?)
